The Canary Islands

Tropical location, diverse nature

The Canaries owe their unique nature to their location in the middle of the Atlantic, just 115 km off the west coast of Africa. The archipelago comprises Tenerife, Gran Canaria, Fuerteventura, Lanzarote, La Gomera, La Palma and El Hierro.

Tenerife is the largest of them. At its centre rises Teide – it stops the trade winds from the north and so creates a surprisingly varied landscape: the green, rural north contrasts with the dry, hot south.

More than 2.1 million people live on the Canary Islands, around 80% of them on Tenerife and Gran Canaria. Tenerife has about 650,000 inhabitants; around 60% live between the capital Santa Cruz and the old university town of La Laguna. Besides its nature, the island offers cinemas, concerts, theatres and museums, shopping districts, plenty of bars and restaurants, Canarian folklore and traditional festivals.
